Most ongoing, adverse behavior is caused because of of traumatic experiences a child has experienced at some point in their lives, and for many kids, multiple traumatic experiences are an ongoing norm for them. Trauma causes fight or flight behavior and can look very, very similar to ADHD and is often misdiagnosed as such. If adults would learn to talk to kids instead of our punitive “zero tolerance” policies, not only would the adverse behaviors likely end - but providing kids with protective factors such as being acknowledged, taken seriously and being listened to - can promote resilience and lead to better outcomes for them as adults. Most punitive actions retraumatize and make these behaviors worse.

She was kicked off the basketball team because of the potential for “drama” her presence created. She’s been vilified by fellow students, called “criminal,” “rapist” and “child abuser.” She was expelled from school. And far worse. She’s facing a lifetime label of “sex-offender,” because the other girl’s parents brought criminal charges against her despite the fact that the relationship was consensual. What’s more, according to Hunt’s parents, Hunt was 17 when the relationship began, but the other girl’s parents waited until after she turned 18 to go to police.

Unbelievably, prosecutors have decided to press the criminal charge.

So the prosecutor’s office in Sebastian River, Florida thinks this is a worthwhile use of taxpayer money and the court’s time.

Let’s be clear here. The girl she is accused of being with is 14 years old. If she were a male, everyone would be screaming pervert and statutory rape. She should take the plea deal, obey the law, and stay away from the children.

Sigh. Where to begin?

First, the issue of use of IRS authority by the executive branch as an instrument of political power has a somewhat seamy history. You are talking about an agency that administers and enforces what the Supreme Court says is a plenary power of Congress; i.e.: 16th Amendment powers. I seem to recall Nixon had some problems in that area. Ordering audits of political enemies. Of course, Hoover (FBI) was the master of using federal law enforcement power to harass political opponents, but that’s a tale for another day.

Second, the issue is not “answering a few questions.” The issue is whether IRS officials used investigative algorithms to target one type of tax exempt organization over others based on “conservative” leanings, and then whether IRS officials lied to Congress about it. This is problematic and requires further investigation.

Third, read McCullough v. Maryland, as I was required to do in law school. The issue is not whether taxation is inherently wrong; the issue is using the power of taxation as a weapon of destruction against persons or institutions that you don’t like. In McCullough you had classic state v. federal power struggles going on.

Fourth, actually, I voted for Obama. Ooooohhhhhh. NOOOOOO. That doesn’t matter. He has not performed well at all in general (healthcare reform was a joke), and for an issue surrounding IRS methods and practices as political weapons to suddenly pop up, well, just stop.

Also, as an aside, Obama’s understanding of the nature of the middle class in a capitalist society is sketchy at best. This is a problem that plagues the Democratic party in general. But it is not the problem at hand. The problem at hand is whether the IRS improperly used its enforcement powers for political ends.

You might take a moment to browse that bastion of right wing thought, the New York Times, for a discussion of the issues surrounding the IRS problem.

As for Occupy Wall Street, please, these are not gatherings of children. When you know how an institutionalized system is going to respond to your “occupation,” and that system responds thusly, well, you got what you wanted, didn’t you, which is media coverage of your protest. Did it make a difference in terms of legislation or policy? I don’t know.

(BTW, read Arrest Proofing Yourself, by Dale Carson, for a glimpse at populations of people in the U.S. who are harassed, pepper sprayed, and beaten by cops every day.)

Finally, I would favor eliminating ALL tax exempt provisions from the federal tax code, and embracing a simple, progressive tax system. But that is a discussion for another day.

So my son had a really bad last few days with respect to his mom’s illness. Last night I took him to Cabellas and bought him a BB gun. This morning in a beautiful early morning sunrise we sat out back before school and plinked at plastic cups.

So this morning one of the Hospice social workers comes to visit and she wants to know how my son his doing. I mention the BB gun and she gets a look of sudden horror and although outwardly self-contained is actually getting red faced. She goes on about Sandy Hook and how she has a thing about this and how in his mental state he’s going to hurt someone or he’s gonna learn to be just like that poor Adam Lanza. Some shit like that. I finally tell her I’ll keep the BB gun away from him for a while.

But I cannot help but wonder, if I take him to a Mosque, is she afraid he’s gonna become a terrorist? If I open a bank account for him, is he going to become another Bernie Madoff?

She does not understand Asperger’s. The single factor that most caused Lanza’s problems, in my opinion (born of experience) was an absolutely absentee and negligent father. My father was the same way toward me; I am determined to not be the same way toward my son.

Maybe tell her I persuaded my son to trade the BB gun for a chain saw. Hmmmm.

As the husband of a woman who is suffering end stages of breast cancer, I’m inclined to weigh in on Ms. Jolie’s announcement.

First, I have no real problem with the jokes that have sprung up. For me, the humor assuages the uncomfortable horror of that disease.

But when the jokes go stale, no one should doubt for a second that I would gladly trade a wife’s prophylactic mastectomy, and maybe a testicle or two of my own, in exchange for being cancer free right now.

And the real joke will be on us all if we don’t continue to push relentlessly for research aiming at an effective cure for cancer, once and for all.

Edit: By way of explanation, the jokes I read online were along the lines of “RIP Angelina’s breasts.” Adolescent humor that I really hope just tries to relieve the helplessness all humans feel when confronted with the struggles that come with our mortality.

NYPD Illegally Raids House of Man They Brutalized For Throwing Gay Pride Party, Days Before Court Date (Please Read & Reblog)

A gay Brooklyn man is being targeted and harassed by the NYPD after filing a lawsuit against the officers who raided his home without a warrant and beat him unconscious.

It was early Sunday morning and Jabbar Campbell was hosting a gay pride party when two officers appeared at his house responding to a noise complaint. The officers told the party goers, some who were dressed in drag, to keep it down and left soon after.

10 minutes later, another group of police officers appeared. This time they tried to gain access to the building and began banging on the door with their flashlights.

One officer reached for the building’s surveillance camera (bottom gif.) and turned it towards the wall, blocking the view.

“I noticed them turning the security camera and I got scared,” Cambell said, according to the New York Post.

Campbell opened the door after a few moments only to be ‘bum-rushed’ by the cop. Two officers put Campbell in a shoulder lock while “5 to 7” cops beat him with their fists, flashlights and batons yelling “fag”, “homo” and “asshole” at him until he lost consciousness.

“They said, ‘Stop resisting arrest.’ I said, ‘I am not resisting.’”

But the cops beat him up anyway, he said.

“I blacked out. I was concerned for my life,” said Campbell.

The NYPD then arrested Jabbar and questioned the party goers who witnessed the beating, asking them if they were engaging in “gay orgies” and “screwing each other.” They told the officers they weren’t and they also denied that Campbell was resisting.

Police charged Jabbar with resisting arrest and possession of drugs, allegations that Campbell insists are lies, which must be so because the police later dropped the drug charges after the reported on the story.

The NYPD transported Campbell to Kings County Hospital where he received 9 stitches and was diagnosed with a concussion.

Since then, Campbell filed suit against police, but said more men armed wearing police jackets broke into his home without a warrant and their badges hidden from view just days before his court date. They harassed the guests who were at Jabbar’s house and wouldn’t give their names.

The men in blue allegedly asked if his security cameras were operational.

“I don’t know what they’re looking for, or if they were going to plant something,” Campbell said.

Campbell’s attorney said what happened to his client was a violation of the Fourth Amendment – illegal search and seizure. The NYPD’s Internal Affairs is investigating.

Campbell said he plans to sue the police department and at least nine officers for severe personal injuries.

I was able to get an interview with Jabbar Campbell who admitted to me that he believes the raid was intended to scare and frame him :

Anarcho-Queer: Before your attack, the officers blocked the view of a surveillance camera in front of your building by turning it towards the wall. Taking this into regard, do you believe your attack was premeditated?

Jabbar Campbell: Absolutely, the cops turning the camera, which would have been the best witness if not tampered with, shows ill intent.

AQ: During the attack, the NYPD yelled homophobic slurs. In your opinion, was the raid was motivated by hate against queer people and/or people of color?

JC: I strongly believe they (Cops) were targeting homosexuals. They were trying to portray me as some sort of disorderly, arm-flailing, drug influenced crazy homosexual. I also believe that they (Cops) didn’t expect so much brains inside of a dark skinned man in that neighborhood.

AQ: How many officers were involved in your attack?

JC: About 5-7 cops were beating me, approximately 20+ officers reported to the scene.

AQ: What weapons did the officers use to brutalize you?

JC: Fists, billy clubs, flash lights and things of such nature.

AQ: What physical injuries were sustained?

JC: Multiple injuries to my head, face, neck and back just to name a few.

AQ: After you filed a lawsuit against the NYPD, three police officers raided your home without a warrant and illegally detained your guests. Was this to intimidate you? If so, what message do you think they trying to send?

JC: I definitely think this it was an intimidation tactic and also a plot to frame me just to cover up their crimes. I think the message was that they don’t want people standing up to them.

AQ: What happened during the second raid?

JC: They broke in my home, searched my home and search my friends and colleagues taking their IDs and writing their names down. They had their badges turned around and would [not] give their names.

AQ: Are the officers who brutalized you still on the job?

JC: Yes, however, they are being investigated by IAB (internal affairs bureau) and the ADA.

An interesting book to read is “Arrest-Proof Yourself” by Dale Carson and Wes Denham. Carson is an ex cop and FBI agent turned Criminal Defense Attorney out of Miami, and while the book is structured as a guide to avoiding arrest, it serves as an effective condemnation of the entire U.S. Criminal Justice and law enforcement system. Amazon Kindle is where I found my copy of it.

JC’s comments about the cops saying ‘stop resisting arrest’ while they beat him echoes Carson’s warnings about the dangers of falling prey to cop ‘inciters’ i.e.: things cops do to trick citizens into providing an excuse to get beaten and arrested. Lifting one’s arms up to protect one’s head is often treated as resisting arrest, according to Carson. So some cops will get right in your face and scream at you and when you raise your arms in reflective defense, well, now you’re about to assault the cop and you get beaten and arrested, Carson says.

(To protect against a beating, Carson recommends dropping to the fetal position, curling into a ball, and trying to protect your head. If you are already cuffed, try to get your head under the police car or some other protection so they cannot beat your head.)
